Subaru Recall: What 2026 Crosstrek and Forester Owners Need to Know
If you drive a 2026 Subaru Crosstrek or Forester, you may want to take a moment to check your vehicle for a new safety recall.
Subaru is recalling a small number of 2026 Crosstrek and Forester vehicles because of a potential problem with a front lower control arm ball joint. While the recall affects only a handful of vehicles, the issue is important because it involves the vehicle's steering and suspension.
What Is the Problem?
The recall involves the left-front lower control arm ball joint.
The ball joint is an important part of your vehicle's front suspension. It helps connect the suspension to the steering knuckle and allows the wheel to move up and down while also allowing the vehicle to steer.
The problem occurred during the manufacturing process. The nut that secures the ball joint, called a castle nut, may not have been properly tightened on some vehicles.
If the ball joint separates from the control arm while the vehicle is being driven, the driver could potentially lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. Subaru says there may not be any warning before the failure occurs.
How Many Vehicles Are Affected?
The good news is that this is a very small recall.
Subaru identified eight potentially affected vehicles—four 2026 Crosstreks and four 2026 Foresters. The vehicles were built between August 4 and August 13, 2026.
Because recalls are based on specific vehicles and VINs, simply owning a 2026 Crosstrek or Forester does not necessarily mean your vehicle is affected.
What Should You Do If You Own One?
First, check your VIN to see whether your vehicle is included in the recall.
If your vehicle is affected, Subaru has advised owners not to drive the vehicle until the recall repair has been completed. Owners should contact an authorized Subaru dealer and follow Subaru's instructions for getting the vehicle inspected and repaired.
The recall repair is expected to be completed free of charge. Dealers will inspect the affected assembly and replace the left-front lower control arm ball joint assembly as needed.
How Can You Check for a Recall?
You don't have to wait for a letter in the mail to find out if your vehicle has an open recall.
You can use the NHTSA VIN lookup tool to check your specific vehicle. Your 17-character VIN can usually be found on the driver's side dashboard near the windshield or on your vehicle registration and insurance documents.
It is also a good habit to check for open recalls periodically, especially when you purchase a used vehicle.
Why Are Recalls Important?
A recall doesn't necessarily mean your vehicle is unsafe to drive under normal circumstances. It means the manufacturer has identified a potential safety or compliance problem and is providing a repair to address it.
In this case, the concern involves a suspension component that plays an important role in keeping the wheel connected to the vehicle and allowing you to steer safely.
If your vehicle is included in this recall, don't ignore it. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and have the repair completed as soon as possible.
Have Questions About Your Vehicle?
Recalls are only one part of keeping your vehicle safe and reliable. Regular inspections can also help identify worn suspension components, loose parts, uneven tire wear, and other problems before they become bigger repairs.
